How to Build Ad Creative Around a Clear Message

Give each creative one audience, one message and a next step that matches the offer.

How to Build Ad Creative Around a Clear Message — Digitoria blog cover

Write the message before designing

Start with a sentence describing who the ad is for and why the offer matters. If the sentence needs several unrelated promises, split the ideas into separate creatives. A design can be attractive and still fail to communicate. Decide what a viewer should understand after a brief look.

Choose relevant visuals

Use an image or short video that explains the product, service or experience. Keep text legible on a phone and leave enough contrast between text and background. Do not rely on a long caption to explain a misleading image. Make sure you have the right to use the visual and permission for identifiable customers.

Align the destination

The button and landing page should follow naturally from the creative. A person expecting a product demonstration should not arrive at an unrelated homepage. Keep the core promise consistent and avoid unsupported claims. If conditions apply to an offer, make them clear instead of hiding essential details in very small type.

Test meaningful differences

Compare variations that answer a clear question, such as whether a product demonstration explains the service better than a static image. Keep a record of the message and audience for each version. Evaluate relevant responses and enquiries alongside attention metrics. Use the findings to improve the next creative brief rather than copying the most visually dramatic ad.
